Lire le cerveau. Neuro/science/fiction, Seuil, 2011
The image of a brain reader, a device that would allow the direct reading of thought in the brain, is a science fiction dream that is now reappearing in a number of scientific articles. It raises fundamental and fascinating questions about what we call “thinking”, and the relationship between our representations of ourselves and social rituals (our forms of life, as Wittgenstein would say). It is also a key topic in order to analyze the relationship between fiction and science. How do you conceive of a brain reader? What would its functions be? What use would we make of it? How would it transform human relationships? This is what we have to understand by appealing to Wittgenstein, Proust and Hitchcock.
